Solidarity Fridge is a project with a boldly goal: to fight against food waste. 40% of food products in the world don’t even get sold, because they do not achieve the perfect look, not being part of the latest food trends, or because they are too close to the sell-by date. Most of these products are in good condition and the fact is that they just end up in the garbage.
The sell-by date does not mean that a product is unsafe or dangerous. When a product is close to its best before date, the food still can be perfectly acceptable.
Solidarity Fridge is an original project born in Galdakao, a little village of Spain. The brainchild of Alvaro Saiz, founder and president of the “Asociación Humanitaria de Voluntarios de Galdakao GBGE Galdakaoko Boluntarioen Gizarte Elkartea” (Galdakao Humanitarian Volunteers Association). Its goal is to fight against food waste and everyone can take or lend food inside
independently of his economic situation.
The first Solidarity Fridge was installed on April 29th 2015 in Galdakao after many months of work and research by the GBGE in coordination with the township council. In just a month of pilot testing, we realized that the project had achieved its goal, saving 200 kg (about 440 pounds) of food that, otherwise, would have ended up in a landfill. This encouraged us to share the project with anyone who would like to replicate it locally in a legal and secure way.
Nowadays we have seven Solidarity Fridges all over the country: in Galdakao, in the Basque Country University, in Vitoria, in Quero (Toledo), in Valencia (Galileo Galilei College Dorm) and in Donostia. In addition, more than ten townships are in process of installing one in their corresponding areas.
