Principles

The project is open to anyone, regardless of economic situation.

The intention is to provide an opportunity to share good food that would otherwise end up wasted in the garbage. It is important to avoid it being perceived as a charity exercise to “feed the poor”.

So often we speak of “social exclusion” or people “at risk of social exclusion”. This service is not exclusively for “the poor” or “the needy”. We think it doesn’t make sense to start up a service exclusively for “the poor” or “the needy” since accessing the fridge may carry a stigma from the very moment you open the fridge door. What we really want is to include, not to exclude people.

Goal

The goal of the “Solidarity Fridge” is to create a network of fridges that share the same purpose, and that can jointly work towards creating and sustaining a solidarity movement.

To achieve this goal, we are committed to support any additional projects that may join the movement. We pledge to the best of our abilities to provide mentorship, information, documentation, and tips about the legal process (So far in Spain only. We are not yet familiar with other countries’ requirements) to all the projects that want to join us in our crusade to fight food waste.

However, we want to point out that we don’t support any project that may have a particular political agenda or economic interest.

Benefits of networking

Being part of the network means that all the projects share a standard set of principles, goals, forms, documentation and permits, so if any project faces any kind of legal roadblock, it can count on the rest of the network for support.

It is fairly common to find some problems when applying for municipal permits. Since this is such a new and unique project, the municipal authorities face many unknowns to solve before providing the permits. As a member of the network, you can use our forms and templates for soliciting permits and writing the project plan, as well as rely on the credibility of the already established fridges to present a stronger case. We will however not support freelance projects that don’t align themselves with the bylaws and standards of the “Solidarity Fridge” movement.
