The Solidarity Fridge is a project to fight against food waste. 40% of the food products in the world don’t even get sold, whether it is due to less than perfect looks, not being part of the latest food trends, or being too close to the sell by date, the fact is that they just end up in the garbage.

Most of this discarded food is perfectly good. The sell by date is no true indication of a product being unsafe. When a product is close to its best before date, the food still can be perfectly acceptable.

The Solidarity Fridge is an original project born in Galdakao (Bizkaia, Spain). The brainchild of Alvaro Saiz, founder and president of the “Asociacion Humanitaria de Voluntarios de Galdakao GBGE Galdakaoko Boluntarioen Gizarte Elkartea” (Galdakao Humanitarian Volunteers Association).

The first Solidarity Fridge was installed on April 29^th 2015 in Galdakao (Bizkaia, Spain) after many months of work and research by the GBGE in coordination with the township council. In just a month of pilot testing, we realized that the project had achieved its goal, saving 200 Kg (About 440 Pounds) of food that otherwise would have ended up in a landfill. This encouraged us to share the project with anyone who would like to replicate it locally.

The goal of the Solidarity fridge is to reduce food waste.
